Alexandria, Va. to Keep NBA’s Washington Wizards in Capital One Arena through 2050.

Wizards and Capitals to Remain in D.C. as Teams Strike New Deal Following Virginia Relocation Hurdle, Report Says

Alexandria, Va. recently made a disappointing announcement that negotiations to bring the NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards to the city have ended. The proposed development district with a new arena for the teams will not move forward. The city expressed its disappointment in the outcome of negotiations, which were hindered by Governor Glenn Youngkin’s blocking of an incentive plan in the state’s General Assembly.

However, following Alexandria’s announcement, it was reported that the Wizards and D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser were finalizing a deal to keep the teams in Washington at Capital One Arena through 2050. The city will provide $515 million to modernize the current arena. Ted Leonsis had previously announced plans to relocate the teams to Alexandria as part of a larger mixed-use development project.

Despite this setback, Alexandria stated that they believed that the Potomac Yard Entertainment District opportunity was worth discussing and participating in good faith. They expressed disappointment in the outcome between Governor Youngkin and Virginia’s General Assembly but engaged in substantial community engagement that informed negotiations and would have made the proposal better for Alexandria’s future community development prospects.

Governor Youngkin mentioned that personal and political agendas drove away Alexandria project, leading to its end. However, it is important to note that Alexandria will continue to pursue economic opportunities to enhance its quality of life and economic health as a whole.

The city has been actively working on creating economic growth opportunities since 2016 when it adopted its Economic Development Strategy (EDS) aimed at promoting sustainable growth while preserving its unique character. In recent years, Alexandria has witnessed significant economic progress, including increased tourism revenue and job creation.

Alexandria has also been investing heavily in infrastructure projects such as waterfront redevelopment and transportation improvements like building new bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks.

In conclusion, despite setbacks such as this one, Alexandria remains committed to pursuing economic opportunities that benefit both residents and businesses alike while maintaining its charm as one of Northern Virginia’s most vibrant cities.
