Expert Scientist and Author Captivates Young Minds at Glenmont Elementary School

Visit from Science Author and Educator at Glenmont

Last week, Glenmont Elementary School students were thrilled to have Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen visit for two presentations. The presentations were customized for different age groups, with younger students (K-2) learning about earthworm anatomy and the significance of revision in writing. To pique their interest, the young learners even got to hold and observe live earthworms in containers.

Dr. Wheeler-Toppen’s third through fifth-grade presentation focused on the research aspect of nonfiction writing. Using examples from her book, Dog and Cat Science Unleashed!, she demonstrated how to use a research cycle strategy to guide information searches. This interactive session sparked excitement among older students about the importance of research as a fun and vital part of the writing process.

The event was made possible thanks to Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, Glenmont Library Media Specialist Angela Datri, and the Glenmont PTA. The students and staff at Glenmont Elementary School were grateful for this exceptional opportunity to learn from an expert in science education and writing.
