Greta Thunberg’s Protest at the Science Museum: A Call for Change in Oil and Gas Sponsorship

Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

Greta Thunberg led a protest at the Science Museum last month, where the group unfurled a banner with the message: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, comprised of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, expressed concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

In response to the protest, Sir Ian Blatchford, the director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change. He described it as the defining challenge of our time. Despite criticism from some activists regarding Adani Green Energy’s sponsorship of the museum’s new gallery, Blatchford defended the decision to accept sponsorship. He stated that trustees believe in maintaining relationships with companies like Adani Green Energy to promote efforts in making the global economy less carbon intensive.

The Science Museum is committed to addressing climate change and educating the public on this critical issue. Despite controversy surrounding its oil and gas sponsors, it remains dedicated to promoting science and environmental conservation.
