Hyundai and Kia Take Home Multiple Awards at World Car of the Year Competition

At the New York Auto Show, the Kia EV9 takes home the 2024 titles for World Car of the Year and World Electric Car.

The Hyundai Group has been on top of prestigious vehicle awards, particularly in the electric vehicle category. Kia and Hyundai vehicles have swept major titles at the World Car of the Year competition in both 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 took home multiple awards, followed by the Ioniq 6 in 2023. This year, Kia made a comeback with EV9 winning the top title for both World Car of the Year and Electric Vehicle categories.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N also won the World Performance Car title. The competition is judged by a panel of one hundred automotive journalists from twenty-nine countries. To be eligible for the main prize, vehicles must have production exceeding ten thousand units annually, be available in at least two major global markets, and be priced below luxury options in their regions. The EV9 beat out competitors like BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 to win the top title.

In addition to winning several awards this year, Kia also surpassed other competitors like BMW i5 and Volvo EX30 in the electric vehicle category. Other winners included BMW’s 5 Series and i5 for World Luxury Car, and Volvo’s EX30 for World Urban Car.

The Toyota Prius was a surprising inclusion this year and won the award for World Car Design of the Year, beating out finalists like Ford Bronco and Ferrari Purosangue.

Overall, these awards highlight Hyundai’s continued dominance in the automotive industry as well as Kia’s impressive comeback this year.
