Israel’s Healthcare System: Catching Up with the Developed World in Hospital Beds and Resources

Israel’s Health System Ranks at the Bottom of OECD Countries: A Troubling Report

Israel’s healthcare system is lagging behind in several key areas compared to developed countries, according to a report. In 2022, Israel had only 2.1 beds per thousand people in general wards, which is below the average of 2.4 in developed countries. The country ranks fourth from the bottom in the table, with South Korea having the highest rate of 7.3 hospital beds per thousand inhabitants. Germany follows closely behind with 5.8 beds per thousand people, considered one of the best health systems in the world.

Psychiatric hospitalization beds are also low in Israel, with only 0.3 beds per thousand people, compared to an OECD average of 0.1 beds per thousand people. Belgium and Korea lead the list with 1.3 beds per thousand people each. In rehabilitation departments, Israel lags even further behind with only 0.3 hospital beds per thousand people, below the OECD average of 0.5 beds per thousand people.

Despite these shortcomings, the Ministry of Health has plans to address these issues by adding more hospital beds over the next five years. An additional 1,790 general hospital beds are expected to be added, bringing the total number of general hospital beds in Israel to around 17,500. The Ministry also plans to add 300 beds in rehabilitation departments and new centers will open in Jerusalem and the north region of Israel. Furthermore, it expects to add about 245 psychiatric ward beds as well.

Minister of Health Uriel Bosso emphasized that these additions are crucial for improving the health system and increasing accessibility and quality of care for all residents of Israel.

Director General Moshe Bar Siman Tov highlighted that more funds will be required for medical services as well as additional personnel to enhance medical services for all residents of Israel.

In conclusion, despite its strengths in certain areas such as mental health care and primary care services, Israel’s healthcare system still faces challenges when it comes to providing enough hospital capacity and resources to meet demand from its growing population.
