New WHO Regional Director Takes the Lead in Fight Against Polio

Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

The 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks was recently held virtually by health ministers from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. This was the first gathering under the leadership of Dr. Hanan Balhky, the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.

During the meeting, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Co-chair of the Subcommittee, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s determination to end polio during her tenure. Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates and also Co-chair, expressed his enthusiasm for Dr. Balhky’s vision and expertise in driving regional efforts towards eradicating polio.

The health ministers discussed regional strategies to combat polio and shared updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns. Dr. Balhky’s leadership is seen as a promising step towards bringing the world closer to eradicating polio.
