Rising Turnover Rates at Austrian Airlines Due to Low Pay and Demanding Workload: The Struggles of Young Employees and the Union’s Fight for Better Working Conditions

Austrian Airlines employee at AUA had hoped for a compromise during negotiations, as the salary offered was not enough to sustain them. The pay disparity between Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines for the same job was too significant, leading to a high turnover rate among young employees who could not afford to stay in their jobs due to the demanding nature of the work and low pay.

Some colleagues found it difficult to make ends meet, especially those who needed a car to commute to work. Many had to rely on their parents for transportation or move back in with them. The union Vida demanded better income potential, access to meals around the clock, and suitable accommodation near the airport, which were seen as necessary by the employees.

The job requirements had become more physically demanding, with unpredictable schedules that caused stress for employees with families. In some cases, access to food options was limited, leading employees to bring their meals or cook in their rooms. The demand for amenities like a pool and fitness area was essential for ensuring that employees remained physically fit for the challenging job.

While some aspects of the union’s demands may have seemed excessive to outsiders, the employees believed they were necessary for their well-being and ability to perform their duties effectively. The focus was on staying rested and well-fed to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies while dealing with the physical toll of the job, especially on flight attendants’ feet.
