Small Businesses Report Positive Hiring Trends, Despite Economy Challenges

Easing of Small Business Hiring Challenges Indicates Continued Economic Strength

Small businesses across the country are experiencing relief in their hiring challenges, according to the latest data from the CBIZ Small Business Employment Index. In February, there was a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.17% in small business employment, indicating that these companies are continuing to expand their workforce despite economic conditions such as high interest rates.

One of the main challenges faced by small businesses when it comes to hiring and retaining employees is their inability to offer competitive salaries or benefits like health insurance. However, with steady growth in small business hiring, this trend suggests that these companies are finding ways to attract and retain talent despite these limitations.

The CBIZ index monitors hiring trends among thousands of companies with 300 or fewer employees across the country, providing insight into the state of small business employment. According to Anna Rathbun, chief investment officer at CBIZ, the unexpected strength of the U.S. economy is reflected in this steady growth of small business hiring. In February, 20% of companies in the index increased their staff, while 60% maintained their current headcounts and 20% reduced staff numbers.

Different industries are experiencing varying levels of hiring activity, with sectors like administrative and support services, arts, entertainment, and technology and life sciences seeing gains. Conversely, industries such as accommodation and food services, insurance, and utilities reported decreases in hiring activity. This regional variation reflects the diverse economic landscape across the country.

Regionally, the West saw a slight increase in hiring activity compared to other regions due to its strong tech industry presence. The Southeast also experienced a slight increase due to its growing healthcare sector while Central region saw an uptick due to its manufacturing sector which is showing signs of recovery after being hit hard by COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand Northeast region experienced a slight decline due to its reliance on finance and retail sectors which have been struggling post-pandemic.

The positive hiring trend among small businesses mirrors that of larger companies as U.S employers added 275k jobs in February which exceeded expectations.
